For most of my life, I have been experiencing the “Miracle of Alfalit.” Since 1967 when I first learned about Alfalit’s work on a trip to the Dominican Republic, I have been a volunteer. My life and that of my wife Lilliam have been blessed as we have experienced firsthand how Alfalit’s work breaks the cycle of illiteracy in families. Alfalit is a tool that enables people to lift themselves out of dependency to better lives. Truly, education is freedom.
Alfalit has come a long way in 45 years. Over 7 million people have learned to read and write and we have touched the lives of many others. Yet, there is so much more to be done. We face many challenges as we try to sustain and help our programs grow. One challenge is finding necessary funding to send to the countries for their classes and to purchase textbooks.
There is an old saying “You cannot hold a light to brighten someone’s path without brightening your own.” That happens in Alfalit when one teaches one. When you share the light of literacy with others, you brighten your own path.
For every dollar you give to Alfalit, 92 cents goes to the countries and projects. Only 8 cents are used for administration. This is a very high ranking for any nonprofit organization, or any organization. Through Alfalit your money works harder for the cause it was intended.
We have over 6,000 volunteers worldwide in the poorest areas of the world working to put love for humankind in action, some at great personal sacrifice and risk. They are counting on us. Let us exercise our privilege to give.
Thank you for your much needed support.
