Background:
Guatemala (Spanish: República de Guatemala, Spanish pronunciation: [reˈpuβlika ðe ɣwateˈmala]) is a country in Central America bordered by Mexico to the north and west, the Pacific Ocean to the southwest, Belize to the northeast, the Caribbean to the east, and Honduras and El Salvador to the southeast. Its size is just under 110,000 km² with an estimated population of 14,000,000.
A representative democracy, its capital is Guatemala City. Guatemala’s abundance of biologically significant and unique ecosystems contribute to Mesoamerica’s designation as a biodiversity hot spot.
Education:
Illiteracy Rate: 29%
The government runs a number of public elementary and secondary-level schools. These schools are free, though the cost of uniforms, books, supplies, and transportation make them less accessible to the poorer segments of the society. Consequently, a significant number of poor children do not attend school. Many middle and upper-class children go to private schools. . Only 69.1% of the population aged 15 and over are literate, the lowest literacy rate in Central America.
